So called Tessera Sanitaria, which is strictly connected with your Fiscal code (Codice Fiscale). This insurance covers from 1 Jan till 31 Dec of the same year. It is highly recommended.
Benefits:
- Base doctor (Medico di base): This is something that every Italian residents have or should have. Not having a medico di base is a strange thing to Italian, as you will turn to your doctor first for every health problem you have. Your doctor will then prescribe you medicines or tell you to do additional tests. This includes Covid-19 cases as you can consult your doctor for which type of medicine you can take at home while in quarantine for example. Only in severe cases you will be transported to the hospital.
- Reduced price for certain medicines (not all). If you do not possess this card, high chance you will have to pay full price for costly medicine.
- Can be used to make Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno). Please ask Questura Officers first for details because each of your cases are not the same.
How to make it
- Register: Go to CAF. This is a Public office that is involved in your administration procedures. Come here after you have acquired your Fiscal code (Codice Fiscale) and state that you want to do Tessera Sanitaria.
Provide them with your personal documents including: Passport, Codice Fiscale, Address (Where you are staying so they will send you the card later on), email address, phone number
You will be asked to come back again after 2 weeks. - Registration letter: When you come back here, ask about your Tessera, they will provide you with a letter.
- Pay: Bring this letter to the Post Office and pay your annual fee of 150 euro. Every year you will need to pay the fee.
- Payment receipt: Bring the Payment confirmation back to CAF
- Wait: Wait for approximately 1 month and your card will be delivered to you, or you can use the digital certificate sent to you through email.
